Why Your Business Needs a Cybersecurity Steward

When growing a business, decision-makers often rely on the counsel and expertise of trusted advisors. Among these advisors are the people charged with setting up and protecting a company’s network security. Think of them as cybersecurity stewards.

The word “steward” comes from the Old English word stigweard, which translates as the keeper or guardian of the house, particularly for someone of high status.

A steward has a duty of care to protect the household – or in this case, the business – from all external or internal threats, as well as to maintain agility within the network so that the business can take advantage of new opportunities and scale accordingly.

Whether an organization is just starting out, relocating or expanding, or shifting some or all its data to cloud-based storage, cybersecurity stewards ensure that all the systems are robust and protected, as well as accessible in whatever form they need.

Setting Up the Household

Just as the stewards of old managed the household staff, a cybersecurity steward manages the security team and all the components that make up a company’s network infrastructure.

Whether setting up the network for the first time or taking stock of what exists and mapping out how best to manage it, there are many decisions we stewards make. At Enetics, we coordinate all hardware purchases to ensure we know exactly how all the pieces fit together for our clients’ systems.

In fact, unless clients prefer otherwise, we own and maintain all the network infrastructure equipment ourselves, while our clients license the software that runs on top of it. If our clients prefer to keep their own equipment in place, we maintain and support it, and as it gets replaced, we typically manage the purchase and lifecycle ownership of the new equipment. This ensures that if there’s a problem, our in-depth knowledge of the entire system helps to streamline support, and we can scale our offerings to match our clients’ needs.

As companies grow, their networks often grow with them. And depending on where a company is in its lifecycle, levels of support will change.

Managing the Household

We work with each client to customize the level of support they need and want from us. Many companies have incredibly capable IT people on staff, and they need us to help them get set up and intervene only when things get off-track. At other times, companies want us to build everything from scratch and take care of all their ongoing maintenance and security needs.

To simplify things, we have three general client plans – Basic, Enhanced and Premium – and within each plan we’re able to customize our offerings to ensure customers get just what they want and need.

Basic Package

Clients who sign up for the basic package are mostly comfortable managing their IT systems on their own. Like all our service plans, we begin with a review of the company’s infrastructure and recommend any enhancements that would improve performance. We then manage the implementation of those enhancements, including network design, hardware and software purchases, installation and setup. At this package level companies have access to routine help desk support, as well as notification of any updates or upgrades they need. We also provide an annual executive check-in to make sure everything is running smoothly.

Enhanced Package

At the Enhanced package level, clients receive all the basics as well as a comprehensive review of their organizational infrastructure and recommendations for increasing security, efficiency and overall optimization. They also receive monthly onsite maintenance visits and meet twice yearly with an Enetics executive to review their system functionality and discuss any outstanding needs.

Premium Package

Clients with critical infrastructure needs typically sign up for Enetics’ Premium package, which provides everything at the Enhanced level, along with ongoing strategy, maintenance and hands-on support. Premium package clients can expect weekly onsite maintenance visits, as well as quarterly check-ins from Enetics executives.
