Client
The client is a nonprofit biotech incubator whose mission is to support companies in achieving their scientific milestones and speeding their ideas to market. To do this, they provide both the workspace and know-how that biotech companies need to grow. The client currently has two locations in the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as one each in Salt Lake City and Ann Arbor, Michigan. The first international location will open in Toronto in 2025.
Opportunity
Startup biotech entrepreneurs find it a challenge to secure affordable lab space with robust internet connections, capable of handling the heaps of data they generate. The client knew it wanted to make itself “future resistant,” that is, able to adapt to the growing needs of its clients. It also knew it needed a skilled IT partner that could help troubleshoot whatever challenges arose for the entire network, and willing to respond to the unique needs of each startup.
Solutions
For the client’s first installation, Enetics Networks came to the table with an initial plan based on the organization’s existing needs. They soon realized, however, that the incubator’s rapid growth, coupled with its data-hungry entrepreneurs, required a more robust solution.
Although the client could have started out by installing internet service with shared bandwidth, after learning more about the organization’s growth trajectory, Enetics recommended an enhanced internet service plan with dedicated bandwidth. This proved fortuitous as over the last several years, the client has welcomed more biotech companies that leverage artificial intelligence in their work, which generates a tremendous amount of data.
Another networking challenge that Enetics helped the client resolve was when a biotech startup brought in a mass spectroscopy machine – an ultrasensitive measuring device used for determining the mass of molecules in a sample. The machine also produces phenomenal amounts of data. Rather than try to leverage cloud-based servers, Enetics set up local infrastructure to process the data on-site. Additionally, Enetics worked remotely with the mass spectroscopy machine’s support staff to get the $2 million device up and running quickly.

Results
Enetics has been working with this client from the very beginning, and despite various challenges, together they’ve come up with solutions to get the work done right. While biotech startups typically have a 5% success rate, over the last five years the biotech companies working with this client have seen a nearly 85% success rate, and they have collectively raised over $900 million.
As the client continues to expand across the U.S. and into Canada, it fully expects to have Enetics as its networking management and IT security partner.
